An acute Chemical Pathology and Haematology service is provided by the Homerton Pathology department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The definition of an acute sample is one where the result is likely to affect management of a patient before the time when a routine sample would otherwise be reported (refer to the Guide to Laboratory test directory pages for the routine turnaround times for individual investigations.)
Only CLINICALLY URGENT samples should be requested acutely. Please use this service sensibly; - if it is abused there will be delays in the reporting of truly urgent results. Please ensure also, that all such orders are accompanied by a valid telephone, extension and/or bleep number with which the laboratory can contact you with your patient's results.
All other results that meet specific criteria for communication of abnormal results will be telephoned as soon as they become available (for further information please refer to Chemical Pathologyand Haematology critical results phone limits and departmental guidance on the communication of urgent pathology data outside of normal working hours.)
