Smoke-free Homerton

Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is planning to move towards a total smoking ban at Homerton Hospital by the end of this year.

The Trust plans to introduce the smoking ban in phases, the first phase being a ban on all staff smoking on-site from October. This is the month of the annual Stoptober campaign, a 28 day-long event each October run by Public Health England during which participants are encouraged to stop smoking. The Trust has published an engagement document asking for views and comments from staff, patients and the public about the plan, which can be downloaded below.

Comments and feedback on the engagement document can be sent by email at smokefree@homerton.nhs.uk or by post to the Education Centre, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Homerton Row, London, E9 6SR.  Comments and feedback must be received by 4th September.

Andreena Walton, the Trust’s smoking adviser said: “In October we will be calling on all staff to cease smoking on the hospital site. At the end of the year, the remaining smoking shelters will come down and anyone wishing to smoke will have to do so off site. We are currently liaising with the local authority and local residents. We will continue to encourage people – staff and patients - to give up smoking.”

Trust Chief Nurse, Sheila Adam said: “Smoke free public buildings and services have now been the norm for 10 years following the introduction of the Smoke Free England Law. Many NHS organisations are already totally smoke free and have been so for several years and there is now a national drive to ban smoking completely on all NHS sites.

“Smoking remains the number one health risk to people in this country and is the cause of many diseases and conditions which cost the NHS millions of pounds a year to treat.

"It is right and proper that we should be discouraging smoking on NHS sites but at the same time we propose offering nicotine patches and support to patients who are smokers whilst in hospital."
