The Newcomb Library offers a range of courses run by the library staff that can be tailored to meet individual needs. Contact us to arrange an individual or group session.

Courses are usually arranged to take place between 9am and 5pm so please contact us to discuss a suitable time subject to staff and venue availability e.g. the IT training room, a classroom or a venue of your choice with internet accesibility.

Newcomb Library orientation

Introduction to the Newcomb Library

Length: 20 minutes

This orientation session covers:

  • meeting the library staff
  • registering with the Newcomb Library
  • finding and borrowing books and journals
  • self-registering for an OpenAthens account which enables free access to e-resources such as databases, e-journals and e-books.

Finding the evidence

Length: 90 minutes

This session covers:

  • defining and explaining systematic reviews, protocols and the hierarchy of evidence
  • showing how to perform basic and advanced searches in the Cochrane library
  • demonstrating how to read an Odds Ratio Diagram/Forest Plot
  • showing how to search NICE Evidence for medical topics and filter results
  • demonstrating advantages of NICE Evidence over Google for finding quality evidence-based information

Searching the healthcare databases

Length: 2 hours

This session covers:

  • introduction to NICE HDAS (Healthcare Databases Advanced Search)
  • performing advanced searches in databases such as Medline, CINAHL, Embase and others
  • how to plan a search strategy using PICO
  • how to execute a search strategy using both subject headings and keyword searches
  • how to broaden/refine searches by combining or limiting results
  • how to display, select and save your results
  • how to save your search and set up alerts

Making the most of e-resources

Length: 90 mins

This session covers:

  • self-registering for an OpenAthens account
  • how to access the 3000+ full-text e-journals available
  • how to access the 2500+ e-books available through a variety of platforms
  • registering for a BMJ Learning account and accessing e-learning modules
  • demonstrating how to use the clinical point of care tool UpToDate
