We recognise that the first few months after graduation are a steep learning curve and a time for you to acclimatise to the role of staff nurse.

It can be hard to put into practice all the learning from your course and come to terms with the fact that you are now a fully registered accountable practitioner.

We offer a structured preceptorship programme which will guide you through the challenges and help you to settle into life at Homerton.

Headstart

Preceptorship is a period of structured transition for the newly registered practitioner during which he or she will be supported by a preceptor, to develop their confidence as an autonomous professional, refine skills, values and behaviors, and to continue on their journey of life-long learning (Department of Health 2010).

Headstart is a 12 month programme that includes monthly study days, supervision on clinical areas, 1:1 coaching and action learning sets to help you develop each other.
It is available for all newly registered nurses and midwives or those returning to acute care after a period of time.

Programme Structure

  • Allocated preceptor to support each newly qualified nurse
  • Monthly meetings with preceptor to review progress and identify and arrange any additional support or experiential opportunities as required.
  • Mandatory monthly study days
  • Professional Practice
  • Reflective element- action learning
  • Enhanced clinical skills teaching
  • Use of Elsevier Clinical Skills online
  • Simulation Training for acute care
  • Preceptorship competency based document

You can review the structure of our preceptorship programme by downloading our workbook here.

Our Newly qualified nurses are given their 'New Nurse Badge' to indicate to our colleagues you're in your first year of registration and may need extra support on the clinical area
