Who is the Programme Suitable for?
The Return to Nursing programme offers nurses (adult / part 1 of the register) with a lapsed registration an opportunity to become active again on the NMC register with a view that this will lead to employment as a registered nurse.
Once the programme has been completed successfully we aim to offer all our return to practice nurses a contract of employment or the option to join our staff bank for fleixble working options.
How is it delivered?
The Return to Nursing Programme prepares you for re-entry onto the professional register and is an essential requirement for returning to nursing and regaining Registration. The course consists of practice placements at homerton, with taught days based at the City University to cover the theoretical elements.
Upon completion of the Programme you will be able to apply for a permanent position within the trust as a Registered Nurse. Alternatively, if you're looking for flexible working options you can apply for our Staff Bank.
Once employed, we will continue to support you through our established Preceptorship Programme and you will also have access to our in-house training and education to continue your development.
We have a variety of placements across our clinical settings that host return to practice nurses. We have had return to practice nurses across:
Acute medical units
Elderly care ward
The placements work on a voluntary basis, which means they can be flexible and work around you and your time.
The course consists of ten study days, which are held weekly over a period of ten weeks. You will participate in seminars, workshops, online discussion, and clinical skills updates. You will also complete sixty hours of self-directed learning and complete a minimum of 180 hours depending on how long you had a break in Nursing as follows:
- Break in Nursing 3 years to 4 years – 180 clinical practice hours
- Break in Nursing between 4 to 5 years – 250 clinical practice hours
- Break in Nursing more than 5 years – 300 clinical practice hours
You will complete a practice portfolio, in which your achievement of practice based competencies will be assessed by your mentor in practice. You will also complete an assignment in which you will reflect on your practice and critically analyse skills and competencies.
We reccomend working an average of 60 hours per month (15 hrs per week) to make the placement a worthwhile learning experience and work the majority of these shifts with your assignment.
