Nursing education
Our nursing education department provides a range of training opportunities for health professionals. Our trainers each specialise in a different aspect of clinical education provision.
We encourage and support our staff members in their continuing education and training, as we believe in the importance of professional development.
See below for the following training and courses available

Simulation training: using Patient Simulators in healthcare education allows us to create a safe and realistic learning environment. Manage realistic scenarios without the risk of causing harm to patients, simulate everyday situations, re-create untoward incidents to learn from them or allow you to experience scenarios that do not occur frequently or ‘on demand’ in practice. By working through scenarios with your professional colleagues your assessment, communication, team working, management and problem solving skills will improve in a safe environment.
We constantly monitor the courses that we run for our staff members and act upon the information provided to us. Over the last year, we have introduced a range of new courses to meet the changing demands placed on health care professionals.
University opportunities
In line with our commitment to providing continuing professional development, our staff have the opportunity to study at City University, our main contract provider for external training.
Modules can be taken on a stand alone basis to directly address specific KSF development needs, or can be combined and accumulated to form a BSc, postgraduate diploma or masters degree qualification. (Please note this does need to be relevant to current role and responsibilities and personal development plans).
Staff wishing to apply to City University must seek support from their line manager before it can be authorised by nursing education department. All staff are offered support throughout the application process.

Pre-registration education
We ensure the provision of practice opportunities for pre-registration nursing students within the Trust.
We implement initiatives aimed at developing and enhancing the quality of nursing students, and we promote and participate in inter-professional learning for students.
We identify, monitor and create learning opportunities and experiences in the practice area; ensuring that practice areas are adequately prepared, supported and resourced to manage students allocated to them.
We identify and expand new placement areas, experience opportunities and negotiate with ward managers to ensure best possible placements within their areas.
Students are provided with a lot of unique opportunities:
- High quality placements, using Hub and Spoke, which helps students gain better practical skills enabling them to provide safe and adequate care to patients. It also helps them in their choice of selecting the community of practice they wish to be placed for training.
- Practical sessions offered, including OSCE preparation, vital signs training, CPR training, EPR training, interview techniques, and weekly teaching sessions by various clinical nurse specialists.
- Induction and reflective sessions. Support is also given to our seconded students on a six-monthly, or as needed, basis to monitor their progress.
- Staff are also given support on mentoring students; annual in-house mentorship update is provided, mentors also have a quarterly forum where they are given guidance and support with students issues.
