Coloproctology

We provide a comprehensive service in all aspects of coloproctology, including benign and malignant diseases.

The service is provided by one full-time colorectal and general surgeon, and two half-time senior lecturers in coloproctology and general surgery, supported by the colorectal nursing service. There are four consultant-led outpatient clinics per week, each supported by a specialist colorectal nurse.

We run nurse-led inflammatory bowel disease, defaecatory disorders, proctological wound, colorectal cancer follow-up, stoma care, and pelvic floor dysfunction clinics, which complements the medical delivery of care and allows patients greater awareness, understanding, responsibility and empowerment.

We have been awarded the status of ‘specialist training unit’ (designated) by the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, the coloproctological professional body. Miss Pardoe has succeeded Mr Lunniss as Royal College of Surgeons of England surgical tutor, responsible for basic surgical trainee education.

We are part of the Academic Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology at Homerton, and we work very closely with our medical gastrenterological colleagues, with weekly journal clubs and X-ray meetings. In addition, as a designated colorectal cancer unit, we hold weekly colorectal cancer multidisciplinary meetings at Homerton.

Our outcomes for benign conditions are published in peer reviewed medical and nursing journals, and colorectal cancer outcomes submitted to the national database. Members of Homerton colorectal cancer MDT are active members of the Network CRC Tumour Advisory Board, of which Mr Lunniss was past chairman.
