Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is where the digestive system and its disorders are studied. Hepatology incorporates the study of the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas, as well as the management of their disorders.

We offer a general gastroenterology and hepatology service in addition to a number of speciality services outlined below.

Services available

inflammatory bowel disease
upper GI disease
viral hepatitis - a dedicated viral hepatitis clinic is run on a Monday afternoon. There is also a nurse-led clinic for viral hepatitis (Thursday morning) which receives direct referral for assessment, monitoring and treatment of hepatitis B and C from primary care and various departments within the hospital including ante natal, fertility and department of sexual health
endoscopy
women-only clinics and endoscopy lists - we recognise that some women feel more comfortable undergoing intimate physical examinations in a women-only setting. We are able to offer both outpatient clinics clinic and endoscopy lists entirely staffed by female doctors and nurses.

Making an appointment

Direct referrals should be made through Choose and Book or via a standard referral letter from your GP.

Waiting times

Waiting times for both routine outpatient appointments and endoscopy are six weeks or less, and usually within four weeks. Urgent patients are seen within two weeks.

Consultant gastroenterologist and physician with a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr Wood is also director of medical education at Homerton Hospital

Dr Laura Marelli
Consultant gastroenterologist and Clinical Director of NE London Bowel Cancer Screening with a special interest in bowel cancer screening, endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease and capsule endoscopy
