Urology

We deal with the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions affecting the kidney, ureters, bladder, prostate, penis and testes.

Treatments are mainly based in main theatre, day stay unit, outpatients, bryning day unit and the wards.

Clinics

Most conditions are assessed in the urology outpatient clinics. There are in addition specialist clinics in the following areas:

trus biopsy clinic (Friday mornings) - Trans-rectal ultrasound and prostate biopsy clinic This clinic takes place in the Day Stay Unit. Small samples of prostate tissue are obtained for diagnosis. Biopsies are taken to exclude men who are suspected of having prostate cancer.

prostate assessment clinic (Wednesday mornings) - For men with urinary symptoms such as going to the toilet often or difficulty in passing urine.  A medical history and a careful history of the symptoms are taken.  Men are often asked to pass urine into a special machine so that the urinary flow can be tested (flow rate) and a scan of the bladder is done to ensure that the bladder empties properly.  Men may be asked to start medication or are given lifestyle advice at this clinic to help manage their symptoms.

catheter clinic (Mondays) - Both men and women with urinary catheters are seen in this clinic to help them with any catheter related problems or to assess their need for the catheter.  If patients have been catheterised for urinary retention (inability to pass urine) the catheter will be removed in this clinic.  If the catheter is removed the patients needs to demonstrate that s/he can pass urine after the catheter is removed.

raised prostate specific antigen clinic (Thursdays) - Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a blood test used to monitor for prostate disease.   Men who have a higher than normal prostate blood test need to have this monitored to assess their need for a prostate biopsy (TRUS) to exclude prostate cancer.

intravesical therapy clinic (Thursday afternoons) - Intravesical therapy (chemotherapy given into the bladder via a catheter normally after an operation) is given to some patients with bladder cancer.  The therapy helps to prevent recurrence of bladder cancer.

cancer follow-up clinic (Tuesdays and Thursdays) - For patients who have already received treatment for their cancer are seen in these clinics where patients are monitored for remission of their cancer.

haematuria clinic (Wednesdays) -  Patients are referred to this clinic usually by their GP or emergency department for the  investigation of blood in the urine.  A careful history and examination are undertaken and tests arranged to investigate the problem.

erectile dysfunction clinic (Fridays) - Men are assessed for their need for treatment or their response to treatment when they have difficulty maintaining an erection.

pre-assessment clinic (Mondays) - Patients who need to have an operation are seen to ensure that they are fit enough to have surgery performed.  Patients are only seen in this clinic if they have already been seen in another clinic and have agreed to have surgery.  The relevant tests needed before the operation are arranged (if not already done).

urodynamics clinic - A diagnostic service for men who have persistent bladder problems or who need surgery (TURP). Urodynamic testing ensure appropriate treatment.

gepan clinic - Intravesical treatment is given for 6 weeks initially and then monthly, for the treatment of recurrent UTIs and interstitial cystitis.
