Neal Zetter - poet in residence
20 August 2008
How can writing poetry make you feel better? Neal Zetter, comedy performance poet will helping patients to find out when he begins an exciting 3 month residency at Homerton Hospital.
From September through to Christmas 2008, Neal will be working with long stay patients with acquired and traumatic brain injuries in the RNRU, where he piloted a workshop earlier this year in conjunction with Shaun Caton.
The residency has been funded by the Hackney Learning Trust and will offer a diverse package of exercises and experiences aimed at patients with specific speech and language difficulties.
Whether reading or writing poetry, patients will be encouraged to jot their thoughts and impressions down, inspired by visual aids (such as photographs, pictures and personal items) and assisted in the creation of word lists that go on to form the basis of very effective poems and prose.
Neal Zetter s dynamic and innovative approach makes his workshop a powerful opportunity for patients to express themselves verbally. He does not subscribe to any given style or idiom of poetry and prefers instead, to foster the confidence and engagement between the patient and their interests, bringing out their natural voice.
Developing this relationship is a real skill and Neals theatrical flair, abundant sense of humour, and energy makes for an inspiring and therapeutic intervention. He is working with both the Art Curator, Shaun Caton and in collaboration with the speech and language department.
