Our services

Accident and Emergency (A&E)

We treat adults and children who present with a variety of conditions, including primary care, injuries and emergencies. As well as having majors/resuscitation and minor injuries areas, we also provide a children’s emergency assessment area and a primary and urgent care centre (PUCC). We see over 100,000 new patients every year.

Please report to reception when you arrive. Children will be directed to the designated CEA, where they will be assessed by registered children’s nurses. This is a secure area and has restricted access for safety. No hot fluids are allowed in this area.

All adult patients who arrive independently to the department are registered by the reception team. They have received training so they are able to identify patients who may be directed straight to the PUCC or minor injuries. All other patients will require an assessment by a triage nurse. This ensures patients are seen in the most appropriate place and it has also been proven to reduce overall waiting times. It is important that you inform nursing staff of any difficulties you may be experiencing or if you require assistance.

Where would I be seen?

Sore throats, coughs, colds, urine infections and a whole other variety of conditions would be seen in the PUCC area. If you would normally go to your GP but are experiencing difficulty in obtaining an appointment or registering, then you will most probably be seen in this area.

Twisted ankles, cuts, bruises and injuries of any nature that are non-life threatening will be directed to the injuries area, where they will be treated by emergency nurse practitioners.

If you have been sent by your GP with an urgent referral to a speciality team you will be seen in the majors area. You may also be treated in this area if you have chest pain, difficulty in breathing or need prolonged investigations and admission to hospital.

Life threatening emergencies are dealt with in the resuscitation room. These patients are normally bought in by ambulance.
