Acute pain service

We deal with the management of acute pain. The patients we see are inpatients who have either had a surgical procedure or who are referred for advice on managing acute pain. We use up-to-date skills and knowledge for individual assessment and treatment.

Services available

We utilise many methods in acute pain control including:

  • patient controlled analgesia (pumps)
  • epidural infusions
  • local anaesthetic infusions
  • TENS
  • hot/cold therapyanalgesics.

Different pain control methods:

  • cold therapy heat therapy
  • deep breathing exercises
  • distraction therapy
  • massage for relaxation
  • basic pain guidelines for GPs.

Making an appointment

Patients are referred to us by any healthcare professional within the Trust. Patients can also self-refer. This service is for inpatients only.

How to contact us

If you are being admitted for surgery and would like to see a member of the acute pain service, please ask a member of staff to contact us on your admission.
