Outpatient clinic

Patients are seen for assessment of complications and review of medication. The physician usually also examines the eyes and undertakes a foot assessment.

Patients are assessed for hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and other metabolic risk factors.  Annual review is only undertaken for patients whose GP offer no structured diabetes care, or for patients whose GP feels unable to solely manage a complex constelation of diabetes related problems.

A diabetes specialist nurse is available to see those patients in clinic who need educational input. In particular problem solving with those patients who have poor diabetes control, seeing patients requiring insulin, follow up for inpatients and follow up for women postnatally.

The diabetes specialist dietitians are also available in clinic to give advice on lifestyle changes and diet. The clinic runs next to the main podiatry clinic and patients with diabetes foot problems can be assessed and treated concurrently.

The diabetes clinic is on Wednesday mornings in the main outpatients department.
