Midwives at Homerton

Homerton hospital employs over 150 midwives. We are also a teaching hospital and training of the future generation of midwives is ongoing. Students work under direct supervision of a midwife at all times.

You may be seen by a student midwife during some of your appointments, or a student midwife may be present.

Your midwife will ask your permission for this and you are free to decline the presence of a student. However, allowing student midwives to participate in your care provides a vital training opportunity and we hope that you will agree to their involvement in our care for you.

Supervision of midwifery

Supervisors of midwives maintain the protection of the public as well as support and guide midwives to reach excellence in their midwifery practice.

Pregnancy and childbirth needs to be seen in a social as well as clinical context in order to be responsive to the individual needs of women and babies.

The supervisor of midwives is available for women wishing to receive advice or support in relation to maternity care provision as well as to the professionals the supervisor represents.
