Phlebotomy (blood clinic)
The practice of phlebotomy, or the technique of venepuncture, generally refers to the collection of blood from a vein.
About our service
Most areas of medicine rely on diagnostic testing, often on blood. Phlebotomists are health care professionals who have been trained to collect patient blood specimens for examination in laboratories. Skilled phlebotomists can find hidden veins, introduce a needle into the vein and extract blood with little or no discomfort to the patient.
Our phlebotomists are fully trained and well experienced; however we are a recognised training department and we train students under the supervision of fully qualified phlebotomists.
Some blood tests require a fasting period of 12 to 14 hours beforehand, which your doctor will advise you about. Please check with the phlebotomist that you have been fasting correctly.
Opening times
Monday to Friday
8am to 9am - Diabetic fasting patients only. Fasting diabetic patients that are given priority between 8am and 9am should go to the Small Blood Clinic, which is situated in the yellow corridor (Phlebotomy ANC room).
9am to 5pm - Other patients, based in the main blood clinic. Please note that if you are referred by your GP you need to be in the clinic before 4.30pm as after that we are only able to see referrals from the outpatient departement.
We are based in x-ray 2.
Please note that that the Laboratories are open on Saturdays but the blood clinic service (Phlebotomy) does not operate on weekends.
Making an appointment
You do not need to book an appointment in advance unless you are attending for a GTT or a Glucose Tolerance Test which does require an appointment.
Please take a number when you arrive at the clinic and wait until your number is called. There may be a long wait to be seen, approximately one to two hours, although the procedure itself only takes a few minutes.
We will send your blood sample to our laboratories for analysis. The results will be sent to the GP or doctor who requested them.
