Homerton Hope’s “Positive Life” project aims to provide a unique, one-stop service for patients that will allow them to receive both clinical care and support in one centralised location. To do this we need a new building and a new team. 

Through support from the NHS, selected Trusts, and major benefactors, we hope to house a specialist, multi-disciplinary Advice, Support, Information and Community Education team in the HIV Centre to work with people at the time they present for clinical care.

The capital expansion plans will enable NHS staff to cope with increasing numbers of service users (1,200 service users anticipated by 2012), and it will also capitalise on its internationally-renowned research work.

Working alongside key HIV support agencies, we will be able to develop the service model at the Homerton and address the deeper psychosocial needs of a particular patient-group.  The needs of our clients are complex and multiple; because of economic hardship, social stigma and communication issues, many patients are prevented from accessing treatment or turn in too late for testing.

Led by our Director of Sexual Health, Professor Jane Anderson, we will build on opportunities to expand the current team and further study HIV and its links with poverty, education, culture, ethnicity and social exclusion. Research in this area will have far reaching benefits in the management and prevention of HIV not just locally, but nationally and globally.
