Stroke services
Each year around 500 people in Hackney will have a stroke. The most common cause in Hackney is high blood pressure. Most people will need to come to hospital; a few may be looked after at home. Strokes can affect people of any age.
Services available
We offer a range of services for people living in Hackney who have had a stroke or are at risk of having one. These include:
- a clinic for people who have had a temporary or very slight stroke (called Transient Ischaemic Attack or TIA)
- a specialist nurse to optimise early care after stroke
- a specialist team of doctors, nurses and therapists to work with people after a stroke
- a comprehensive assessment and definition of need for early neurological rehabilitation
- a 27-bed rehabilitation unit for stroke patients
- community teams to help people continue their recovery at home.
Further information about some of our services can be found in the specialist services section.
Making an appointment
The stroke service is only available to inpatients or people who have been inpatients under the stroke consultant.
A referral to the TIA clinic (for temporary strokes) can be requested via your GP. See specialist services for more information.
