Haematological cancer referrals

Referral route 

GP to please book before patient leaves practice 

 

Possible procedures on typical USC (“2ww”) pathway 

Blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, lymph node biopsy, X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI. 


Essential tests prior to referral
 

FBC, blood film, U&E, LFT, LDH, serum calcium, immunoglobulins, serum protein electrophoresis, if appropriate, and serum free light chains 

 

Optional tests (concurrent to referral) or other useful information 

Ultrasound scan for lumps 

 

Things the hospital or patient need to know 

Contraindications for MRIs (e.g. pacemakers, aneurism clips etc) 

Past medical history and full drug history 

 

What the hospital tells the patient in letters 

We try hard to minimise delays in clinic, but you should allow up to 2 hours for your appointment. If your GP has asked for you to have some blood tests, please make sure these are done before your appointment.
