Urgent Cancer referrals – information for GPs

This page gives information to clinicians referringtourgent suspected cancer pathways. It helps support your conversations with patients about what will happens next, essential tests we need you to arrange and how patients can prepare for appointments. This means we can investigate and - if required- treat them as soon as possible.

How to make an urgent suspecteded cancer referral

Please make sure that your patients know that we are investigating them for cancer. All our appointment text messages and letters clearly state this. We regularly receive calls from patients who are upset because they did not know they were being investigated for cancer until receiving an appointment notification from our bookings team.

If you are a GP

GPs should use the e-Referrals Service (e-RS) to refer patients and upload the relevant Pan-London Urgent Suspected Cancer ( USC) referral form. For EMIS users, forms can be accessed via the F12 key. Current versions of referral forms and NHS England guidance can be accessed here - NHS England - London Urgent Cancer Referrals

If you are a dentist

Dentists should visit the Head and Neck Cancers page to see how to submit an urgent suspected cancer referral.

Other professionals

Other referrers who do not have access to e-RS should contact the Cancer Referrals Office on 020 8510 5099 Email: huh-tr.Cancerreferrals@nhs.net
