Respiratory medicine

Respiratory disease is a major problem in Hackney. We are committed to providing a high quality service, working in partnership with patients, to improve the quality of life of people who live with such illnesses.

Services offered:

  • Asthma
  • Lung cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease (COPD)
  • Bronchiectasis
  • TB
  • Sleep and ventilation
  • Lung Function Tests
  • Other diseases of the lungs

About the service
We provide outpatient clinics and inpatient facilities for patients requiring it. There are about 15 outpatient clinics each week covering the different specialist areas.

Inpatients are generally admitted to Lamb Ward, the respiratory ward, which is a 28-bedded unit that is also equipped with four ‘side-rooms’ for particular types of illness.

We provide education and support for patients admitted for acute asthma. This includes assisting with the understanding of the condition and its treatment; reviewing medication and assessing appropriate inhaler device(s).

The service also develops self-management skills to allow patients, with individual action plans, to effectively manage their condition. This allows our patients to understand the correct adjustment of medication to prevent serious attacks, as well as when to seek help from their GP or attend A&E.
