Intensive care unit extension opens at Homerton and refurbishment of existing unit starts

Homerton’s new intensive care unit extension opened to patients in February of this year. The new 9 bed extension is in what was the critical care surge area close to the existing unit, which had been opened to deal with increasing numbers of very ill patients at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new extension has more space with upgraded facilities to improve the experience for patients and their loved ones and a better, more efficient working environment for our people.

Work has now started to refurbish the existing unit to bring it up to the same high-quality standard, build more side rooms, and increase the intensive care capacity.

“We are delighted with the new ICU facilities. This exciting refurbishment of our intensive care  means that we can provide critical care  for patients in an upgraded environment that will improve patient, their loved ones and staff experience."  - Lucy Jenkins, ICU Matron
