Essential preassessment information
Bariatric surgery is a major, life altering intervention and it is important that you understand what you will need to do to give yourself the best possible chance for a successful outcome and are fully aware of the risks and implications of the procedure. To support you with making the right choices for your circumstances and to enable you to prepare for your initial assessment with the service, our team have put together a series of videos that will provide you with essential information.
You are required to work your way through these short videos before your first appointment with the service, which will be an online group session that will give you the opportunity to speak to our nurse and dietitian and ask questions about what to expect. It is essential that you watch the videos on our website before this Q&A session as the content will not be covered and they contain essential information on the service’s clinical pathways and how bariatric surgery may impact your life. Watching these videos will support you to make informed choices about how you proceed with your care. After your online Q&A session, you will be invited to attend a bariatric assessment face-to-face session where you will be asked to complete a short quiz to check your understanding of the information provided.
You can refer back to these videos at any point whilst you are in the patient pathway and you are also able to access the handouts via the webpage.
If after watching the videos and attending the online session, you feel that you do not wish to proceed with bariatric surgery, please contact the service to cancel your assessment appointment so that it can be offered to another patient by emailing huh-tr.hhbs@nhs.net.
Bariatric surgery is a complex medical procedure that isn’t the right answer for everyone. Your team will assess your individual suitability throughout the pathway and will work with your best interest in mind. It is important that you are honest and transparent with our team throughout your journey to enable us to assess your risks and advise on appropriate support to ensure the best outcomes. Concealing important information relating to your physical and mental health may affect your progress on this pathway.
In preparation to your assessment, please download and complete the BAC Pack from the surgery information section of the patient resources section of this website to bring to your appointment.
