Important Service Update: Closure of 80 Leadenhall Street

Our satellite sexual health clinic at 80 Leadenhall Street will be closing in the autumn of this year, with the final day of service on Friday 17th October 2025.
Following discussions with our commisioners, the Trust has made this decision in response to declining patient numbers since COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing costs associated with the leasing the ground floor site on Leadenhall Street. The clinic has been part of Homerton’s sexual health services network serving Hackney and the City for the past seven years and was well used by City workers and others prior to the pandemic (4% of users of the clinic are residents of the City of London). However, attendance levels have not returned to pre-pandemic levels, while the cost of leasing the ground floor site has continued to increase.
Key stakeholders have been briefed on the planned changes, and there is a shared understanding of the rationale behind the decision to close the site. It has been acknowledged in discussions that there are challenges related to patient attendance and rising operational costs, and there is support for the approach being taken to ensure continuity of care through alternative service provision.
As we prepare to close the doors of our 80 Lead enhall Street clinic, we want to take a moment to recognise just how much this space has meant.
Since opening in April 2018, 80 Leadenhall Street has been a vital part of our service – situated in the heart of the city, offering fast, discreet, and high-quality care to thousands of people, many of whom work nearby and relied on the accessibility we provided.
From April 2018 to June 2025, we welcomed over 54,000 patients through our doors. That figure reflects not just the scale of our service, but the trust placed in us and the consistency of the care delivered by the team.
Our team at HSHS 80 Leadenhall Street have set a strong example. The professionalism, warmth, and responsiveness shown every day has left a lasting impact – echoed in the words of our patients:
“…saw me at the last minute when already closing and was super friendly and efficient. Thank you!”
“The best NHS service around in this day and age! Wonderful to be seen by one clinician at this clinic, which is very rare nowadays in the NHS.”
We also want to thank our patients. Your trust, your feedback, and your continued engagement helped shape 80 Leadenhall Street into the valued service it became.
While the clinic may be closing, its legacy continues. The six clinic staff members will continue their vital work within the service across other sites in Hackney, and patients will still be able to access care at these locations.
As part of this transition, the Trust will begin delivering a primary care-based service from the Neaman Practice in the City from September, ensuring continued access for service users.
As we say goodbye to this site, we carry forward a sense of pride, in the work that was done, the people reached, and the care we will continue to offer, shaped by the values 80 Leadenhall Street has represented.
To the team at Leadenhall, to our patients and to our stakeh olders: Thank you for being part of this important chapter with us. 80 Leadenhall Street may be closing, but its impact lives on.
Please see below for a set of FAQs and note that we have set up a dedicated inbox for any additional queries you may have about the closure of Leadenhall and the new City-based provision at The Neaman Practice (more information below and on our main page).

Frequestly asked questions

1. When is the satellite clinic closing?

Answer: The clinic will close to patients on Friday 17th October(TBC). The service is closing ahead of the lease end date in November 2025 to allow sufficient time for decommissiong the space, safely removing equipment, and returning the site to the landlord in line with contractual requirements.

2. Why is the satellite clinic closing:

Answer:   The Leadenhall clinic is closing due to affordability issues and reductions in usage by both City residents and City workers since COVID-19. The clinic is no longer financially viable as the costs of delivering the service have increased. Since COVID-19 some activity has moved online (to shl.uk) and people are choosing to use other clinics located closer to home as working patterns have changed.

3. What will happen to patients who are currently using the clinic?

Answer: Patients will be given a choice as to whether they want their care to be transferred to another clinic operated by the Homerton e.g. The Ivy Centre at St Leonards Hospital, or they can choose to access specialist clinics located in close proximity to the City. These include the Royal London (Ambrose King Sexual Health Centre, Whitechapel), Guys and St Thomas (Burrell Street), Chelsea and Westminster (Soho) and Central and North West London (Mortimer Market).

Some of the services provided at 80 Leadenhall were testing for sexually transmitted infections- much of this testing can now be undertaken via the free online service provided by shl.uk .

4. What alternatives will you offer? How will you ensure there is good access to sexual health services?

Answer: A weekly clinic will be established at the Neaman Practice, which is the local GP in the City of London. This will start in September 2025. City residents using the Leadenhall will be informed of this opportunity and can be referred here for follow up appointments, where relevant.

As over 50% of all activity at Leadenhall by City residents is for testing it is expected that some of this can move online to shl.uk . Furthermore, DigiPrEP is now available for City residents. This means people can now access PrEP online and no longer need to attend a clinic in person, unless there are specific medical reasons to do so. In such cases, patients can still access care at other Homerton-run sexual health services or through an alternative provider near the City. A list of available services and providers can be found here www.shl.uk/clinics

5. How will this closure affect sexual health in the City?

Answer: The clinic at 80 Leadenhall is a Level 2 service, a satellite of the Clifden Centre Level 3 service. This means not all specialist sexual health services are provided at Leadenhall.

Although the Leadenhall provides some Level 2+ services (LARC, PEP), patients are referred into Level 3 service at Homerton for specialist services including consultant review, microscopy, health adviser motivational Interviewing interventions and psychology (psycho-sex service).

Closure of the Leadenhall could lead to reduced access to level 2 sexual health services, which may increase the risk of untreated STIs and unplanned pregnancies for City residents. To mitigate these effects, a satellite sexual health clinic will be held at the Neaman GP Practice from September 2025. This will include access to long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).

There are also approximately 1,500 City of London residents registered with Tower Hamlets based GPs split evenly between Goodman’s Field and Spitalfields Practice. Spitalfields already offers enhanced sexual health services to all registered patients and conversations have started with Tower Hamlets to explore if Goodman’s Field could also be encouraged to provide enhanced services.

6. Can patients still receive confidential sexual health services elsewhere?

Answer: Yes, patients can continue to access confidential sexual health services across Homerton’s other clinic sites in Hackney, which remain fully operational.

Sexual health services are also open access across London, meaning residents and City workers can use services elsewhere if preferred. In addition, the online service SHL.uk is available 24/7 for residents in 30 London boroughs, offering free STI and HIV test kits, oral contraception, and emergency contraception. Visit www.shl.uk/where for more information.

7. Will the closure impact services for marginalised communities?

Answer: The closure is not likely to disproportionately affect marginalised communities, such as people with low incomes, global majority communities, or the LGBTQ+ community. We will continue to keep usage by marginalised communities under close review to ensure the alternative arrangements we have put in place do not widen access or health inequalities.

8. What should residents do if they need urgent care after the Leadenhall closes?

Answer: If residents need urgent sexual health care, they can attend another clinic in London, including Homerton’s Ivy Centre or Clifden Centre, contact their GP, visit an emergency department, or access care through online services.

For up-to-date clinic locations, opening times, and contact information, please visit the Homerton Sexual Health website: www.homerton.nhs.uk/sexual-health

9. Might there be opportunities for the clinic to reopen in the future?

Answer: The clinic is unlikely to be reopened in the future. Homerton will offer a regular satellite clinic at the Neaman Practice and is committed to respond to any emerging or urgent need within the resident community, for example through pop-up clinics or vaccination clinics.

10. How many young people currently use Leadenhall?

Answer: Among City of London residents, during 2023/24, 83 people aged 24 and younger used the Leadenhall. Of these 83, one person was under 18. For 24/25 76 people aged 24 and under have used the clinic, of which one person was under 18.

For young people (YP) up to the age of 25, a dedicated YP clinic is open every Tuesday from 3-7pm at Health Spot at Forest Road Youth Club, where YP can walk in or make an appointment. Details for this can be found vis the Homerton Sexual Health website: www.homerton.nhs.uk/sexual-health or by calling 077 8570 1504 to book an appointment with a nurse.

11. Is this closure due to Labour government cuts?

Answer: No, this closure is unrelated to any national government policies or budget cuts. It is a result of reduced activity and income against rising costs, which makes it no longer feasible for the provider to deliver the service.

12. Will there be any job losses/staff redundancies due to this closure?

Answer: No, all staff working at Leadenhall will continue to work at the other Homerton provided sexual health clinics.

13. I need my coil or implant removed/replaced after November 2025. Where do I go now?

Answer: Appointments at the Neaman Practice, as well as at other Homerton-run sites, can be booked online via www.sexualhealthbookings.homerton.nhs.uk .

If you are unable to find an available appointment at the Neaman Practice, please email huh-tr.citysexualhealth@nhs.net and a member of the Homerton team will assist you.

14. I have regular appointments at the Leadenhall, or I have an appointment booked after November. What do I do?

Answer: All appointments currently booked at Leadenhall for dates after October 17th (TBC) will be rearranged to take place at an alternative location. A member of the Homerton team will be in touch closer to the appointment date to confirm the details. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact the Homerton Team via the dedicated mailbox huh-tr.citysexualhealth@nhs.net
