About Covid-19

Covid-19, also called coronavirus disease, is an illness caused by a virus. Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover without requiring special treatment.

However, some people may be more vulnerable to the effects of Covid-19 because of their age or because they have another health condition which puts them at greater risk.  For some people, it can be a more serious illness and their symptoms can last longer, they may even require medical attention.

Adult Covid-19 vaccinations

Staying up to date with your Covid-19 vaccinations is the best way to protect against the disease if you are at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell.

The NHS offers adults Covid-19 vaccinations in the winter and spring to eligible people.

People who are eligible for the seasonal Covid-19 vaccines:

  • People aged 75 or over
  • People aged 6 months or over and have a weakened immune system
  • Residents in a care home for older adults

People who develop severe immunosuppression, for example those who have completed a STEM cell transplant, outside of the seasonal vaccine periods, will still be offered a Covid-19 vaccination by their clinician.

It must be at least 3 months (91 days) since your last COVID-19 vaccination.

Household contacts of people with a weakened immune system are not eligible for the Spring Covid-19 vaccine.
